Many of you may have watched the recent interview on 20/20 regarding the incidents of sexual molestation of swimmers by swim coaches.  We, and our counterparts throughout the sport, are very concerned about this issue.  Attached to this Update you will find a letter from USA Swimming addressing the issue, and outlining the steps that USA Swimming is taking to protect our children.

We, the Board of Directors, want to assure our members that the Evergreen Hurricanes' coaches have undergone background checks prior to being hired, which were conducted through USA Swimming and are repeated every two years.  In addition, coaches Jeff, Julia, and Nathan have all undergone the Jefferson County Sherrif's office background check (including fingerprinting) because they all coach high school swimming and these checks are required by JeffCo Schools.

This situation brings forth a reminder to all parents to talk with their children in an age-appropriate manner about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable physical contact between the child and their coach and other adults. Parents must also stress to their children the importance of telling them anytime there is inappropriate or questionable behavior by their coach or other adults.  In the event that there is a concern that a coach is acting inappropriately and in a sexual manner, a complaint should be made immediately to both local authorities and to USA Swimming.

Again, please know that the Board has done its due diligence to be certain that our coaching staff is of the highest caliber.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.
