Brian Pursley
Hello Hurricanes families.

I'd like to give a big compliment to our swimmers at this point in the season. We are in the middle of our most challenging week in the pool so far this fall and our athletes are responding by continuing to work hard with a great attitude in the pool and the weightroom. The next few weeks leading up to our fall break are crucial. With more breaks built into our schedule this winter, it is important that we make  the most of the training peaks leading up to our days off. In this way, our periods of challenge and periods of rest time are both much needed. WIth the right preparation, our rest can become an important part of our overall training cycle. Please continue to encourage and support your athletes through both the work and the rest!

We have a number of announcements and reminders this week. Please read on to stay up to date.

Thanks a lot and go Hurricanes!
Coach Brian

Hurricanes on Social Media

I'd like to remind everyone, especially new families, that we have some great volunteers, led by Stacey Peterson, fostering an online community for the Hurricanes. Please check out what they have going on on our public pages:

Kickstarts

We're a little behind in getting Kickstarts up and running this month while we solve the staff and pool time limitations associated with our new schedule.

I'm very happy to say that a number of our senior swimmers are saving us from our staffing dilemma by enthusiastically stepping up to coach Kickstarts. Many of our senior athletes have extensive experience teaching swim lessons, and all of them have an in-depth understanding of the critical lessons we teach our Category 1 swimmers. I know this because they hear all the same lessons from me every day!

I know that our Cat 1 swimmers are going to love their senior coaches, and I am more excited than ever about Kickstarts with more of our own senior athletes involved.

We plan to schedule most of our Kickstart opportunities on Wednesdays between 4:30pm and 6:00pm, with at least one other weekly opportunity for those who can't make Wednesdays.

We are experimenting with a new booking platform that has just been released by TeamUnify, our team management software suite. I will be sending out a scheduling link as soon as it is available.

We hope to start with a limited number of Kickstarts on Wednesday, October 11th, and be operating at full capacity after fall break, starting October 25th.

Small Training Schedule Updates

Starting next week, there are a few small updates to our training schedule that you can see  HERE.

  • Kickstarts have been moved to Wednesdays between 4:30pm and 6:00pm. Note that we are considering at least one more Kickstart opportunity per week outside of Wednesday.
  • Monday and Tuesday Senior gym workouts will be moved back 15 minutes to 6:45pm to 8:00pm, and our Thursday gym workout will be moved back 10 minutes from 6:50pm (or as soon as we can get started after swimming) to 8:00pm.

Our changes to the gym schedule are enabled by an update to the Evergreen Crossfit schedule that allows us to access the gym earlier each day. Though small, I am glad this change will get our senior swimmers home a little bit earlier each night.

Senior Group Pizza Party

The senior group will get a free pass from dryland on Thursday, October 12 (yes, dryland is actually cancelled) for a pizza party at Beaujo's. Dinner will cost $20.00 per person, which will be billed to your Hurricane's account when you sign up to attend. Please sign up  HERE. Thanks to Deanna Dykema and Chris Adamowski for putting this fun night together for our Senior athletes!

Team Directory

We'll be posting an updated team directory to the website next week. It will only be visible to logged in members, but if you would like your contact information withheld, please send me an email by Monday, October 9th.

Halloween Walk

The hurricanes will be participating in this year's Halloween walk in downtown Evergreen. During this event, local business and organizations open up their doors to trick or treaters throughout the evening. This year we will be setting up a tent / table to join in. We are looking for volunteers and donations to make it a success. Please check out the Sign Up Genius  HERE to see what you can do. For more information about the Halloween Walk in general, please click  HERE. Thanks to Nate Rothman and Bridget Williams for getting us organized to participate this year!

Troutdale Tavern Fundraising Dinner

This is an important reminder that we will be hosting our second Troutdale Tavern Fundraiser on Tuesday, October 24th. Please save the date and stay tuned for more details. Our last Fundraiser brought in over $4,400, and we have heard of other organizations generating twice that amount! We plan on hosting 2 of these dinners per year, and they are a huge opportunity for our team. Please plan to come have a great meal and bring along your friends, family, neighbors, and anyone else interest in supporting the Hurricanes!

Hotel Booking for PPA Harvest Heats

We have a block of rooms at the Marriot near PPA. Rooms are $139 per night and include breakfast for two and double Marriot points. You can book your room with the group rate  HERE. There are many hotels in the area, some with cheaper rates. Much of our team has enjoyed getting together at the Marriot in the past, but please feel free to use your discretion to stay where you choose.
